& AIDS Committee of Ottawa Presents:

During Pride Week festivities many of us love to party or know people who love to party. Come hang out with the lovely folks from QM & ACOs Safer Partying Outreach Team (SPOT) to discuss & explore some of the things you can do for safer partying.

Because partying can be fun & also safer.

This workshop takes a sex positive, drug positive, and harm reduction approach to partying. Let’s talk about the pre-drink, the party, the cutie that you brought home, and the comedown the next day. We welcome feedback and input, and we encourage participants to share information or stories based on their own experiences or knowledge.

Some topics this workshop will cover:

– Substance Awareness
– Harm Reduction
– Safer Substance Use
– Safer Sex
– Safer Planning
– Overdose Prevention
– How to Support a Friend

If you would like to collaborate, or if there are any specific topics that you would like included, contact Derek:

The goals of ACO’s harm reduction program are to:

Provide harm reduction equipment, such as clean syringes, safer smoking supplies, disposal equipment, condoms and more, as well as providing a place to deposit used harm reduction equipment;

Provide information regarding safer substance use and related health issues;

Provide information and referrals to other services in the city, such as treatment services, housing support, food and meals, and more;

Support the efforts of people looking to provide harm reduction outreach in their communities;
Support the empowerment of people who use drugs in Ottawa; and,

Work with the community in challenging the stigma and discrimination of people who use substances.

Accessibility note:
Pressed is an accessible venue. The washrooms however are located on the main floor but require a step to access.

The washrooms at this event will be gender neutral in recognition that so often gender variant, trans, two spirit and women identified people are at greater risk to violence and harassment. The QM hopes to create safer spaces for folks to be who they are and to enjoy their night free from violence and body policing. This includes making a commitment to providing gender-neutral washrooms.

“Safer Space Policy”:
QM collectively strives to create spaces that are free of as many barriers as possible as means to working towards liberation. This means that we are all responsible for creating the spaces we desire, by educating ourselves, each other and ensuring that we are continually engaging in these conversations and creating relationships of support and collective responsibility. While we recognize that no space is exclusively “safe” for anyone, we must collectively work towards mitigating harms. In response to certain experiences that have happened within our spaces, we have decided to remix ground rules to apply to a specific situation in which groups of people come together to make themselves vulnerable: our dance parties.

QM works towards recognizing dynamics of power and privilege that exist within society and which have historically oppressed our communities. We believe that these same dynamics and tensions exist within our own communities and we are working continuously towards addressing these tensions and creating supportive spaces. People participating in our events and dance parties are asked to be aware of their language and behaviour and to think about whether these may be harming others. Our spaces are not spaces for explicit or implicit violence, racism, sexism, ageism, transphobia, cissexism, sizeism, fatphobia, sexual harassment, and gender policing, or doing anything to another person without their consent. Acting in a way that disrespects, harms others or undermines these values will not be tolerated. QM reserves the right to assess & manage circumstances and situations in the best interest of our collective vision towards creating ‘liberation’ and ‘safer’ spaces.
